My sister and I were on a "road trip" after my sons wedding in January of 2009.
We had the most delicious fresh salad to start. Like nothing I'd ever had. We ended up each getting a sandwich. Mine a yummy grilled cheese with some kind of sauteed mushrooms, and her a Vietnamese sandwich. Both were so delicious, we shared.
The next morning we went back for breakfast, which was plentiful and just as good. Great atmosphere, friendly folks.
I can't wait to relocate and go again!
How is this a FAVORITE??. Since relocating to San Luis we've tried Big Sky a few times. The first, I was brought the wrong soup. The second, I was impressed with the quantity of food on my plate, but half of it was flavorless. The third try had the same results, some of the entrees were not warm enough... if they're so darn fast, how is it that they can't get hot food on the table? REally? I think they take pride in being a local favorite and seem to be okay with being mediocre in flavor and service. Perception is everything.
solid restaurant with good food. Most of these reviews are for breakfast so here's a recent dinner review. The food is fresh and the ingredients are healthy. The little corn bread muffins they bring out to the table are really good. I ordered the special which was crab cakes with coconut rice and sugar snap peas. The crab cakes and the sauce were excellent, the coconut rice and peas were low on flavor. My partner ordered the lamb shank with potato latkes. The meat was delicious and the sauce was thick and flavorful. I think the lamb was a really good dish. The beer selection was pretty good. One reviewer mentioned that the service was very fast and I noticed that too. I think it's because you seat on hard, slippery benches that are really deep; you have to sit forward with no back support and that can get really uncomforatble after 30 minutes or so. Maybe that's why they hurry you through!
Flavorful American fare and bright, eclectic decor..
The Scene
San Luis Obispo's trendier set gathers here: locals who linger over the newspaper after breakfast and casually dressed weekend travelers who come in from sightseeing. The space is bright and airy, with cheerful colors on the walls, stars painted on the ceiling and a vaguely Mayan theme. Service is friendly but can be slow.
The Food
The menu here offers tasty, fresh dishes for all three meals. For breakfast, the blue cheese, apple and smoked bacon omelet is delicious and unusual. For a sweeter start to the day, opt for beignets, served three ways: with sugar and cinnamon, stuffed with berries, or filled with chocolate. Lunch includes a nice variety of burgers, salads and sandwiches. For dinner, fish dishes and hearty meat and vegetable plates round out the menu. The cafe also offers a good variety of California wines.
Very nice ambiance. I'm from New York, so maybe my criteria are a little skewed. I liked this restaurant but did not think the food was anything better than good. It's good solid food, not gourmet. The restaurant is lovely inside. There is a nice varied choice choice on the menu and the prices are reasonable. The wine list is short but nice and reasonably priced. The meal was served very quickly (a bit too quickly if you're trying to talk and enjoy the wine). Haven't tried breakfast but I'll try it tomorrow. I suspect it will be good.
The best all around.. Eating out in SLO can be monotonous at times, because there just aren't all that many restraunts. But Big Sky always seems to be different and exciting. The variety and health aspects are what I like most. Me and my husband have lived here for 6 years, and Big Sky has always been our favorite.
Best Cornbread I've ever had!. I live in San Luis. Whenever my roommate and I try to figure out where we want to eat out, for breakfast lunch or dinner, we rarely vary from Big Sky. (The only exception is when we don't want to wait for a table since it gets very crowded at peak times.) I have never had a bad meal. The menu is diverse enough for anyone and offers many healthy, different options, such as yam risotto (a favorite) and sweet potato fries. Did I mention their cornbread is to die for? Really it is. It's a sin to go to Big Sky and NOT have the cornbread.
Great for breakfast. We go to Big Sky for breakfast every time we are in San Luis Obispo. The menu is varied and includes some unusual but delicious items you don't find elsewhere. The decor is eceletic and the place is casual. We love it. I don't think there is a better breakfast place in SLO. The lunch and dinner menus look interesting (and inexpensive) but we haven't tried anything but breakfast.
Great food and a wine selection to match. The atmosphere is eclectic, which matches the food they serve well. They create combinations i never would have dreamed up. If you go for dinner, they have a great wine selection, especially from the local vineyards.
Great Breakfast. I can't speak to the lunch or dinner, but breakfast at the Big Sky Cafe is fantastic. Breakfast meals come with either coffee cake or corn bread. Everyone at our table got the coffee cake, and it was incredible. A huge piece of coffee cake would normally BE the breakfast, and while I was already full when my omelette arrived, the omelette was so good that I ate it anyway. It was a spicy jumbalaya filled extravaganza. Everyone loved their meals, from pancakes to scrambles.
