The problem with great expectations are great disappointments. We recently moved to the central coast from SLC Utah, and were morning the loss of the Market Street Grill. You could buy great fresh seafood (from Utah-go figure), and prime cuts of beef. When we moved here, my wife needed to get her fresh seafood fix, so we started searching for local markets. After going to their website, we were sold and anticipated greatness from Giovannis. What we found was sub-par. Frozen fries? C'mon, shame on you guys! My wife was disappointed as to the skimpy portions of the fish and chips, as well as to the blandness of everything. I think they probably were on top at one point in the game, but are now probably resting lazily on past glory. On the bright side, great location, views and service.
- Pros: Views, Ambience, Service, and Speed
- Cons: Food is only par. Frozen fries- tasted frost burn

I'd like to address your concerns one by one, because I am surprised at your comments. First off Frozen fries are pretty common place, in fact studies show that over 95 percent of restaurant use them, because quality is typically better than fresh.. Secondly our portions are known as the biggest in Morro Bay, our Fish &Chips weighs in at a hefty HALF Pound (all are portioned to the ounce) If you can find one bigger in Morro Bay I'll pay for it. I sure you you come try us again, because either we had a really bad day, or you went to the wrong place.. Just take a look at the line here on a saturday, and that should speak volumes.. :) Thanks! Gio
Are We All Talking About The Same Restaurant?

Since, there is only one review that is even fairly recent I'm thinking things have changed at Giovanni's. One thing that HAS changed seem to be the wait. We didn't wait at all. But it was 3pm on Monday so that probably is a factor. However, if we HAD waited for this food I would have little else positive to say as the service was prompt and friendly. The food was so below average. Especially for a place that is on prime water front property on the Central Coast of California! My fish and chips were hot nothing. Everything was bland and had little flavor. The few things that did have flavor had BAD flavor. The tartar sauce tasted like something from a jar and I could have sworn there was cinnamon in the cocktail sauce. The fish was fresh but was completely bland. The shrimp and scallops were overcooked. The fries are a joke--more hot nothing and freeze dried to boot. All for 10 bucks and the portions were skimpy. My husband said his burger was ok but Carl's Jr. was better-not a rave review. We did buy some shrimp from the store which is very nice and had a great selection but the shrimp smelled "shrimpy" and not so fresh but tasted fine....still. This was such a disappointment! We had heard such great things--even the glass of wine I had was bad and we ended up spending almost $30. Completely uninspired food. Go for the atmosphere and view but this wasn't just a chef's "bad day"--I think Giovanni's has gone downhill.
- Pros: Beautiful view, great patio, good ambience.
- Cons: Below average food, uninspired and overpriced.

We eat at Giovannis about 3 times a year and we love it. We love the albacore fish chips when it's in season. Can you tell us what months you serve albacore fish and chips. It just hapened that we got lucky one time that it was on the menu. Also; like the fact that you can have cocktails with you food now out in the patio area.

The first time that I went to Giovanni's, it was the greatest. I loved the food, the employees and the view. But this last time I went it was horrible! I have had better service at a McDonald's with only one employee. Not only did it take for ever to order our food since the gentleman could not figure out what we were asking him, I am sorry if asking for extra lettuce and extra tomato are to confusing! Then to top it off, they still messed up the food. There were no extra veggies like I had wanted, and the fries were soggy and tasted like they hadn't changed their oil in a year. It was absolutely disgusting. Then to top it off, it you go inside and ask them questions about their seafood, you will most likely get someone who has not a single idea of what they are talking about. I had to ask three different people what date an item was received until I finally got an honest answer. I am sorry but just saying Oh...its fresh just does not cut it. I wish the place would go back to the way it was when I was there in 2005. Every there at that time knew what they where doing, and also how to cook the food.

My wife and I winter in Laughlin, NV and summer in Star Valley, WY...and do lots of traveling in between. The fresh fish at Giovanni's is so superior than we have found anywhere! Having parents living in Morro Bay, brings us to the area frequently. A trip to Morro Bay would not be complete without a visit to Giovanni's! We have experienced some frustration due to long lines to order food to go. Having only one window for orders and pick-ups makes the process inefficient. However, we enjoy the fish so much that we wait!
Best fresh fish-local, not farmed!

Giovanni's is the best location to buy fresh fish. They have real salmon, not arme with color added! They will special order anything for you and pack on ice for free!

Being of Chinese descent, only the freshest fish will do in our household. We can't wait for Dungeness crab season year after year- we just bought six live crabs and had a feast last night. Our guests, the winery owners of Windward Vineyard, Maggie and Marc were more than delighted with the incredible quality of the seafood.
We sipped on their 2006 Pinot Noir and it was a dinner made in heaven. Giovanni's is THE place to purchase your seafood in SLO county. We highly recommend it!

Last visit to Giovannis, I purchased fresh swordfish and smoked swordfish. They were absolutely the best. I am looking forward to returned to buy same and highly recommend Giovannis seafood. If the clerks say it's fresh, I know it is. The flavor is there and my taste buds come alive with the thought of getting out of Cambria to pick up more fresh fish. Thanks Givoannis and keep the good work.

Walk the line

The lines are long here to order food to go, but on my last visit there, the fish and chips were perfectly cooked--moist and not dry. While they're a bit pricey, the portion was generous, the fries were perfect and the tartar sauce was excellent. I could see many ways they could improve the efficiency of the order and pick up process but I see they're working on fixing the problem. An expanded kitchen will hopefully make the whole process faster and less frustrating for the customers. Overall I am a local customer and enjoy the fish and chips better than even some of the restaurants in the area.
- Pros: Delicious food
- Cons: Poor take-out service--too slow
